Gettin' Hitched

So ... big news in the blog world, ok, big news to both of you who read this blog ... but Retired Sorority Girl and I got engaged. Very exciting news! Especially since the end of the world is in December and if not and this were a world run like the movie Logan's Run, I've only got a few months left!

More news to follow on the wedding, date, location, etc. but I can promise you that it won't be outside, in the rain, near a factory, in the heat, playing golf in a tropical storm, eating near a marsh, manual labor like setting up chairs, paying for a honeymoon suite, driving someone's car, getting drinks at Costco the night before or a number of other fun things I've experienced in my 15 years of wedding going.  And I remember all of those weddings ... the good, the great and the awful.

Thanks to all of you who were there to help us celebrate. Let the joys of wedding planning begin!

My bear was way cooler

72 Days ...

With the Braves succumbing to every injury except the plague and the Red Sox destroyed by a horrible front office, its time to focus on the College Football count down.  72 days people !!!!

Happy Friday!

Get it Doug Masters! GET IT ... Video of the day brought to you by Queen and Iron Eagle. Not as cool as Taken 2, but it was clearly zee bomb in 1985.

D-Day

Today is a day that all Americans should remember. Alas, they do not and most have very little knowledge of this date in history. I keep some rocks from Omaha Beach on my desk and actually had a co-worker ask my why I kept rocks from the beach in Nebraska. Ahh the millennial generation, destroying our culture (or forgetting it) one Facebook post and tweet at a time.

One of my favorite quotes / pictures from D-Day:
"You are about to embark upon the great crusade toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you...I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle." Dwight Eisenhower, June 6, 1944

A wedding and Seattle

Due to some unforeseen circumstances, my hours of blog writing have significantly dwindled. It's not for lack for desire to write, but more a reflection and a sign of the times. I'm afraid I'm being pulled in far many too directions to even take a quick moment to stop and smell the roses.  Take this last weekend for instance.
  • Friday -- woke up and rode in a car to Hilton Head for wedding featuring Retired Sorority Girl as a bridesmaid. I spent the full ride on conference calls, emails, texts -- a great way to spend a day off. I had a laptop, ipad, blackberry and mobile all operating out of one plug in the front of a Lincoln -- looked like something out of the Matrix. We were able to enjoy some great good at an outdoor rehearsal dinner and please note that the humidity was about 90% and the temperature was around 92 or so (important for later in the story).
  • Saturday - woke up, went to the Savannah airport and caught a flight to Seattle via Atlanta for a work trip.  Here's what I have to say about that flight -- had the plane flown east, the amount of time I would have spent on planes and in airports could have been equivalent to flying to London / Paris. Anywhoo - meet up with a co-worker, UGA Mom, got to Seattle, sat in a ton of traffic and realized I don't really care for this city but ... figured it could get better. The good news, the hotel room had Act of Valor on demand so at least something good would come out of this trip.
  • Sunday -- wake up early (430 AM) to host a charity event for work. Set up goes fine except for the fact that there are about as many crazy / homeless people in Seattle as there are normal people.  Lots of people yelling at invisible monsters and a ton of drugs (mostly meth and heroin) being used in public.  Oh -- and the best part -- its 40 degrees ... 40 DEGREES IN JUNE and not Celsius.
  • Sunday continued:  The event finishes around 11 and I was able to find a flight back to Atlanta.  Lucky for me, I was on a flight with every 60+ year old who had just returned back from an Alaskan cruise. Because I reminded them of their son, I got to experience hours of stories about water, cruise ships and glaciers.  If you don't know this about me, I hate talking to people on a plane and if you add in old people, that's pretty much my version of hell.
So, key takeaways from this past weekend:
  1. I don't much care for Seattle and if you can wait an additional 90 minute and fly East, you'll arrive in London or Paris which are much more entertaining places.
  2. I will pass on visiting places in the US that are 40 degrees F in June.
  3. Work travel is highly overrated unless you have a private jet.
  4. Note to self -- going from one coast at 92 degrees to the left coast at 40 degrees is not a good idea in June.
Onward, upward and Eastdown and Bound.
